Servant Leadership is about leading without authority. As a servant leader you lead by serving your team, organisation, and stakeholders. It is about you helping others achieve their goals, not yours, as opposed to traditional leadership (i.e. management) where the leader defines the goals and directs others to achieve them.
Why it matters: Since new agile ways of working rely heavily on collective ownership, common goals, and self-organisation, servant leadership inherently plays a crucial role in nurturing such an environment.
Its origins: Servant leadership as a leadership model was coined and created by Robert Greenleaf in 1970.
